In addition, with the exception of the polar regions, which rotated far more slowly, the atmosphere spinning alongside the Earth will clean nearly all of its surface with the greatest hurricane winds.

Even though they would happen more slowly, the effects of a gradual Earth shutdown would still be disastrous. All biological rhythms would be disrupted without the 24-hour day to which we and all other creatures are used, which would result in the extinction of several animal and plant species.

Some scientists think that the planet’s magnetic field, which shields it from cosmic radiation, would also cease to exist. There is a belief that the planet’s rotation has less of an impact on the magnetic field’s creation than previously thought.

Are there non-rotating planets?

In nature, there are planets that do not seem to rotate. These planets always turn one side to their star. This is because the gravitational interaction (tidal forces) between planets and their stars can gradually slow down the planet’s rotation rate until the period of rotation around its axis coincides with the orbital period. For the same reason, the moon is always turned to us with one side.

The same situation develops on many exoplanets, especially those that are very close to their stars, where the tidal effect is stronger. As a result, one side of them is extremely frozen, while the other is hot.
